It’s been two years this month (almost to the day) since that terrifying long surgery. Today, I’m at peace with God and I’m at peace with myself. I hold no grudges and I ask God for forgiveness each day for sins both known and unknown. I try each day to look for ways to help someone, to serve, to love. It heals my heart to help someone else. Some days it’s just an encouraging word or a warm hug. Other days I just simply listen to someones troubles. Sometimes it’s helping a friend move or giving someone a ride. Occasionally I surprise someone with a cup of coffee or a treat at their workplace. At times it’s bigger, like a gift out of the blue just to say “I’m thinking of you” or “I care”.
You see, I realized on those long nights alone, thinking my time here could be coming to an end, that all I really have on this earth are my relationships with others. That’s really what it comes down to in the end. It doesn’t matter what kind of house I have, or what kind of car I drive, how many material things I have, or how much money I have in the bank. None of those things will or can make me well and healthy. I can not take any of those things with me when I leave this earth. But, what I can leave behind are how I made others feel. The small random acts of kindness that may have a ripple effect will carry on.
My purpose on this earth was to raise two beautiful children and help raise beautiful step-children. To be a positive influence in the lives of a few, and to guide, teach, love, serve, and help others is also my purpose. If I’ve been successful at these then my purpose has been fulfilled and my life has meant something. The time I have remaining I will continue to serve, teach, guide, and love others. I will continue to try and make a difference in the lives of those around me.
